HOT SPOTS
Hot spots are one of the most commonplace and difficult of animal skin conditions to heal quickly and properly. A hot spot is a circular localized area of skin inflammation and infection. It is also known as moist dermatitis and acute moist dermatitis. Hair loss is common and the area will be warm to the touch and painfully itchy for your pet. A hot spot needs to be treated IMMEDIATELY because an area the size of a quarter can expand to an area eight inches across in as little as eight hours!!
The primary cause of hot spots is generally a bacteria that thrives in moist environments - such as your pets skin when your
pet licks the trouble spot repeatedly and causes the infection to spread. Some of the reasons that might cause your pet to lick and/or scratch the affected area include -
-
Change in the routine
-
A new dog in the environment
-
Stress in general
-
Boredom
-
Allergies (Food/Inhalant/contact)
-
Fleas/Mites/etc
-
Insect sting/bite
-
Injury (Cut/Scrape/etc)
-
Lack of exercise
Treatments that have been proven to be effective include -
-
Shave the affected area.
-
Cleanse the area with cool water and a gentle skin cleaner.
-
Cool compress the area 2-4 times a day with a cool wet washcloth.
-
Medications - usually prescribed by your veterinarian such as oral antibiotics, topical medications and/or special shampoos.
-
Prevention of licking, biting, scratching - usually by using an elizabethan collar.

WARNING!!!!
It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember that Dr. Ku's Ointment is TOXIC to cats because a cat's digestive system is not designed to be able to properly process it. It is NOT that rubbing it into the cat's skin that is dangerous, it is because cats groom themselves by licking and thereby end up ingesting the oil which is what causes the problem!!
